The Basics of an LED Grow Light


A hydroponic LED grow light is an electrical light to help indoor plants grow in a more controlled environment. Hydroponic lights either try to give a uniform light spectrum like that of the actual sun, or else to give a more tailored light pattern to the specific needs of the individual plants being grown. The hydroponic LED grow lights have come a long way since they were first introduced to the market.

In the early 1990s, LED lights were first introduced commercially as a solution to lighting up greenhouses and cultivating various types of plants at faster speeds. These lights are very energy efficient and have minimal heat loss, making them ideal to use indoors in areas where it may be cold outside. Most hydroponic LED grow lights today utilize a variety of different types of diodes to give off an even light pattern and minimize heat loss. Some lights utilize only high quality silicone and copper diodes while others use LED diodes that produce much more light per watt than the regular incandescent ones.

The first type of diodes used in an LED grow light are what are known as “white led grow lights”. The white LED grow lights are typically used for indoor gardens. These diodes are made from a combination of two different materials, which are mixed together inside a plastic enclosure. One material will be called “clear glass” and the other material will be called “resin”. Both of these materials pass electric signals to the diodes in the plastic enclosure, which then in turn causes the light to create an even color spectrum for the plant to absorb. Another type of diodes used in LED lights are what are called “red led grow lights”. These particular types of diodes utilize red as the primary light source. In order for the red light to reach the plant it must be coupled with green light. This causes the red spectrum of light to be absorbed by the plant and is then converted into visible light by the plant’s photosystem. By coupling red with green, you are achieving both the luminous efficacy and the color temperature necessary for flowering plants.

An additional type of diode light which is becoming popular for use with LEDs is what are called “cool” lights. This term simply refers to any type of light source which has a different spectrum range than blue, green, and red light sources. In addition, the cool lights generally have lower wattage bulbs which allows them to provide lower levels of visible light for the plant growth. Generally, cool lights are best used when the plant growth spectrum is primarily red, because they don’t produce red light radiation which is required for Photosynthesis.

There are also two other types of diodelight which are available and these are the “hard” lights and the “infra-red” lights. With the hard light, the blue light and red light are emitted at different wavelengths which are necessary for Photosynthesis. The hard lights generally have higher wattage bulbs which allow them to function better than the normal lights at full spectrum. At the same time, however, hard lights have shorter wavelengths than traditional lights and typically do not produce a full spectrum of light. For this reason, they are not suitable for plants which are very bright or whose colors need to be seen in the ultraviolet range of light.
